For how long does my position linger in your system? Until one of the following happens: 1) you arrive at your destination 2) you log out or exit the app 3) six hours pass. In each of these cases your position and destination records are automatically erased from our database. We do not keep track of previous locations. You have no history with us. The system does not care where you've been, just where you are right now and where you are going. It shares this info only with those you mapshare with.
Do my friends need to install the app to follow me on a map? No. When your friends receive a mapshare link, be it from WhatsApp, SMS, Facebook Messenger or email, the browser on their phone will open automatically, if they don't have the app. They can even engage in a Meetup with you, whereby both of you see each other, be it via the browser or via the app. They just press the Meetup button at the top.
So why would my friends download the app? You and your friends need the app if you want to continue to share positions without interruption when wemapshare operates in the background. "Background" is when you are flicking to another app or when you simply have the device in your pocket, with the screen off. With the app position updates will continue regardless, but in a browser position updates will stop, until you bring your wemapshare browser page back to the front.
How accurate is this app? As accurate as the positions it receives from your phone's hardware. If GPS is enabled and you are outdoors and get a strong GPS signal, then you can expect an accuracy of 10 meters. However, when in large buildings, like shopping centres, or amongst city high-rises, your displayed location can "dither" a little.
What does the orange circle around the destination marker mean? The circle is a visualisation of our geofence technology. When you enter the area indicated by the circle the app considers you "arrived". The destination marker will go green and, if on an Android device, a sound will play. Your geolocator will stop transmitting position updates within 60 seconds or so. Minutes later your position and destination records will be removed from our database and any shared maps.
Will my location still show on my map when I'm out of Internet/mobile phone range? Yes, on your friends' devices you will appear to be stationary. GPS works independently from the Internet. But to communicate your position to your friends, Internet reception is required.
Does the app use a lot of battery? We have made every effort to keep battery consumption as low as possible.
When I arrive at my destination a clapping sound plays on my Android. But not on my friend's iPhone. Why? Apple (and soon Android too) disallow the playing of sounds when the app is running in the background. You have to touch the screen first. Which defeats the whole purpose of the feature.
My map does not show the shortest/quickest route in my country. How come? For cost-effective operation and best performance we don't support routes for the entire planet, yet. Route drawing is currently supported in these countries:
Australia, New Zealand, USA, South Africa, Great Britain, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Phillipines, Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea,
Did you know... you can put wemapshare in a browser window on your laptop? For instance if you have email or WhatsApp installed on your laptop or desktop and you receive a mapshare-link from a friend, simply click on the link and your browser will open on your laptop/desktop, showing your friend's journey, second by second, just like it does on the app.
